The Opportunity MedMe is hiring its first dedicated in-house counsel to support our Canadian and US business. You'll sit at the centre of MedMe's enterprise commercial work, negotiating with the legal teams of some of the largest retail pharmacy and grocery chains in North America. You'll own MedMe's privacy and AI risk posture across HIPAA in the US, PIPEDA and provincial health privacy legislation in Canada, and a growing patchwork of US state privacy law. And you'll handle the corporate work of a two-entity, venture-backed company: financings, board matters, intercompany structure, equity. You'll also be the first call on employment law as the team continues to grow in both markets. This is a generalist seat by design. You'll triage broadly, build MedMe's first legal playbooks and templates, and know when something is genuinely outside your depth and needs outside counsel or specialist advice. What You'll Do - Own contract review, redlines, and negotiation. Across MedMe's Canadian and US commercial agreements, enterprise SaaS contracts, vendor agreements, and partnership terms. - Support corporate matters. Governance, entity structure, and other company-level legal needs as MedMe scales across two countries. - Manage cross-border complexity. Know when a Canadian answer doesn't automatically apply in the US (and vice versa), and know when to bring in outside counsel. - Support HR on employee-related legal matters. Partner with People & Culture on employment law questions and other internal employee legal complexity as it comes up, flagging when outside employment counsel is needed. - Strengthen the legal function's first playbooks and templates. So contract review and legal triage don't depend entirely on you being in the room every time. About You - ~3 years of associate experience, ideally with exposure to commercial/contract law, corporate matters, healthcare, technology/AI, and privacy/data. - Cross-border experience with meaningful exposure to both legal systems. - Comfortable being the only lawyer in the building: you triage broadly rather than specializing narrowly, and you know when to bring in outside counsel. - Strong contract negotiation skills, you've actually negotiated commercial agreements, not just reviewed them. - Clear communicator who can translate legal risk into plain language for non-legal stakeholders. - Comfortable in ambiguity and early-stage structure, this is MedMe's first dedicated legal hire, so you'll be building the process as you go. - Nice to Have: Experience in a regulated healthcare, pharmacy, or clinical-adjacent business; experience advising on AI/technology product questions; prior in-house experience at a growth-stage SaaS company Success in This Role Looks Like - 30 days: You're reviewing and redlining live contracts independently across both the Canadian and US book, and you know MedMe's core commercial terms cold. - 60 days: You've worked through MedMe's existing contract templates and playbooks, updated where they've fallen behind the business, and filled the gaps, cutting the back-and-forth on standard terms. - 90 days: You're the default first call on healthcare, privacy, and data questions across the business, and leadership isn't going to outside counsel for things you can handle. - Long-term: You've built a a legal function that scales with the business, clear ownership of contracts, privacy, and corporate matters across both markets, with outside counsel used only where it's genuinely needed.
