FirstMark Leads $12M Series A Into Fragment's Ledger for AI Agents
BoxGroup participated in the round, which brings the New York ledger company to $23M in total funding and follows a July MCP server release connecting coding agents to its financial tools.
Fragment, a New York company building financial infrastructure for AI agents, announced a $12M Series A on October 14, 2026. FirstMark led the round, with participation from BoxGroup. The company reports $23M in total funding.
The startup sells a ledger product that lets developers describe financial flows through schemas and generate SDKs from those models, so balance queries and the rules behind transaction entries become infrastructure an application can use rather than a collection of API calls. Fragment's technical walkthrough of a wallet describes idempotent retries, atomic updates and balance conditions — mechanisms aimed at repeated requests, partially completed changes and concurrent activity against an account.
Around that ledger sit two adjacent products. Fragment's payments offering combines money movement and tracking, describes accounts that hold balances, and lists cards and ACH alongside additional rails on its roadmap — a distinction the company's own materials frame as a caution, since a planned payment method cannot be treated as an integration already available to customers. The reconciliation product reads statements, invoices and remittances, syncs external financial activity with ledger entries, and uses clearing accounts to identify what has settled and what remains unmatched.
The agent connection is more than positioning. Fragment's MCP server announcement, dated July 16, 2026, describes connecting agents through clients including Claude, Cursor, Codex and OpenCode to work with financial code. Developers can reach the financial system through tools their coding agents already use.
The team's history predates this announcement. Thomas Neckel and Omi Chowdhury founded Fragment in 2021. Chowdhury remains on the current engineering roster, while the latest announcement names Varun Mohan as CTO, overseeing product and engineering; Neckel is co-founder and CEO.
Fragment identifies Ramp, BILL and Whop among its customers. Those are company-reported relationships, and the announcement does not establish that each customer uses every newly described agent capability.
FirstMark's investment explanation focuses on financial state evolving as agents carry out a workflow — the investor describes a market in which software needs to understand the obligations created by earlier actions before deciding on the next one. Fragment is recruiting across engineering and GTM. Valuation and a detailed allocation of proceeds were not disclosed in the reviewed issuer announcement.
Two dates are worth separating. Fortune dates the close to mid-2025; October 14, 2026 is the public announcement date. The broader fintech market has been active: DevCuration's funding database tracked 13 Fintech rounds totaling $523.6M in disclosed capital over the past 30 days, a tally that includes rounds in structured finance servicing, agent-to-agent finance and tokenized fund liquidity.
