July's founders take 20% of flat-bottle maker Memobottle for $2M
Athan Didaskalou and Richard Li invested in a personal capacity at a $10 million valuation, and both will join Memobottle's board.
The founders of luggage brand July have bought a fifth of Memobottle, the Melbourne company that designs flat, rectangular drink bottles built to fit inside handbags and other bags.
Athan Didaskalou and Richard Li acquired a 20% stake in the 12-year-old business for $2 million, a deal that values Memobottle at $10 million. The Australian Financial Review reported that the two founders invested in a personal capacity and will join Memobottle's board.
Memobottle's founding idea is a shape. Founded 12 years ago, the company designs flat bottles rather than cylindrical ones, a format it pitches at people who carry their water in a bag rather than in a hand. That single design premise has sustained the business for more than a decade.
The investment pulls the July cofounders deeper into Australian consumer products. July, their luggage brand, and Memobottle share a common retail profile: both sell designed physical goods into international markets rather than software or services. The source of the deal — a personal stake taken by two operators from an adjacent category — gives Memobottle board-level access to founders who have already built a consumer brand with an overseas footprint.
For Didaskalou and Li, the purchase marks a shift from running a single company to holding equity and board influence in another Australian consumer products business with an established international retail presence.
The transaction was structured as a stake sale rather than a conventional venture round, with no institutional lead investor named. Memobottle has not disclosed how the $2 million will be used, and no revenue, headcount or prior funding figures were released alongside the deal.
What the deal does confirm is the valuation attached to a business built on a narrow, specific product idea: $10 million for a company whose entire proposition rests on the geometry of its bottles. Whether that premium reflects the strength of the brand or the value of the July founders' retail experience will become clearer as the two sides begin working together through the board.
Memobottle's bottles remain its core product, a category it has occupied since its founding 12 years ago.
