Charter Space Secures $5M Seed Funding to Expand Space Insurance Services
Charter Space raised $5M in a seed round led by Crystal Venture Partners to enhance its insurance platform for over 50 space companies.
Charter Space, an innovative player in the insurance sector, aims to provide coverage solutions tailored specifically for the burgeoning space economy. The company has recently announced the successful closure of a $5 million seed funding round, led by Crystal Venture Partners, with participation from several other investors, including QED, Blank Ventures, and Gaingels. This funding round brings Charter Space's total funding to $8 million, following a previous $3 million pre-seed round.
The company has positioned itself as an AI-native economic defense firm focused on insuring space-related ventures. Recognizing the complexities and unique risks associated with the space industry, Charter Space has developed an insurance platform that caters to the needs of both established and emerging companies within this field. With recent technological pilots conducted alongside various space organizations, the firm has demonstrated its capability to address the insurance needs of a rapidly evolving market.
Charter Space has also launched its nationally licensed insurance brokerage, Charter Interplanetary Risk Corporation, which is already servicing over 50 companies within the U.S. space and defense sectors. Notably, the company has built a significant backlog of insurance business, representing more than $35 million in gross written premiums. This positions Charter Space favorably as a key player in the insurance market for space assets.
The newly secured funding will be utilized to expand distribution channels, grow the sales team, and scale the product offerings of Charter Space. The company is particularly focused on developing specialty insurance products for newer mission concepts, which include in-space servicing, space-based nuclear power, and lunar in-space resource utilization. Their comprehensive coverage strategy encompasses all mission phases, from pre-launch transport and testing to post-separation operations, aiming to provide clients with complete end-to-end insurance solutions.
In a statement, Yuk Chi Chan, Co-Founder and CEO of Charter Space, emphasized the critical role of insurance in fostering innovation and investment within the space industry. He highlighted that a robust insurance market is essential for encouraging American companies to take risks in developing complex space technologies. The company’s efforts not only aim to meet the current demand for space insurance but also to support the overall growth of the space economy in the United States, reinforcing the nation’s leadership in space exploration and innovation.
As the commercial space sector continues to expand, Charter Space is poised to play a pivotal role in building the financial infrastructure necessary for supporting this growth. With its unique focus on the insurance needs of space ventures, the company is addressing a significant gap in the existing market, ensuring that as more hardware is launched into orbit, the risks associated with these endeavors are adequately managed.
