Sprout Family takes BDC-led seed to knit Canada's family-building benefits into one platform
BDC's Thrive Venture Fund led the oversubscribed seed, with Accelia Capital, MaRS Investment Accelerator Fund, StandUp Ventures and The51 also participating.
Sprout Family, a Toronto-based integrated family benefits platform, has closed a $3.5M seed round the company describes as oversubscribed. BDC's Thrive Venture Fund led the financing, joined by Accelia Capital, MaRS Investment Accelerator Fund, StandUp Ventures and The51.
The company sells a scalable technology platform that helps Canadian employers manage family-building support that is otherwise fragmented, spanning fertility services through postpartum care and parental leave. Founded in 2023 by Jackie Hanson and Suzanne Mason, Sprout Family bills itself as Canada's first integrated family benefits platform. Its pitch runs in two directions: comprehensive support for employees moving through their family-building journey, and a centralized tool that lets HR departments administer those benefits in one place rather than stitching together separate vendors and programs.
The fresh capital is earmarked for widening the product beyond fertility services. Sprout Family plans to extend its platform capabilities into pregnancy, postpartum care, parental leave management and return-to-work support — the stages that follow fertility treatment and where employer benefits often thin out. The company also intends to grow its team and strengthen strategic partnerships inside the Canadian insurance and benefits industry, a sector that governs much of how employers actually fund and deliver these programs.
The round lands in a category where employers have been assembling family-building coverage piecemeal, often through point solutions for fertility, leave administration or return-to-work coaching. Sprout Family's bet is that Canadian employers would rather buy one platform that carries an employee from fertility through the return to work, with the HR back office included. That consolidation argument is also what the company leans on in claiming the "first integrated" label in the Canadian market.
The investor list mixes institutional capital with funds that specialise in backing women-led and early-stage Canadian companies. BDC's Thrive Venture Fund led, with Accelia Capital, MaRS Investment Accelerator Fund, StandUp Ventures and The51 all taking part. The funding was dated October 15, 2026.
What the seed does not come with is any disclosure of valuation, revenue or headcount, and Sprout Family did not put a number on how many employers it currently serves. For now, the company's stated plan is a product expansion across the full arc of family building and a deeper push into the insurance and benefits channel that controls distribution in Canada.
