Lagos Life maker Vatar banks $500K pre-seed a week after going viral
The Nigerian browser-game startup raised at a $10 million valuation, with Flutterwave CEO Olugbenga Agboola participating through his fund Resilience17.
Vatar, the Lagos-based gaming startup behind the viral browser game Lagos Life, has raised $500,000 in pre-seed funding at a $10 million valuation — a round that closed barely a week after the title went live.
Lagos Life is a free, browser-based simulation of Nigeria's largest city. Players navigate Lagos, take on virtual careers and trade inside a digital economy built around the city itself. Since its October 2026 debut, the platform has drawn millions of users, a burst of growth that the company cites as the backdrop to the raise.
The round attracted a roster of Nigerian technology leaders rather than a single institutional lead. Flutterwave CEO Olugbenga Agboola invested through his fund Resilience17. He was joined by angel investor Oo Nwoye, Terra Industries CEO Nathan Nwachuku and Mono CEO Abdulhamid Hassan. Vatar's funding details list the round as closing on October 9, 2026.
According to the company, the capital will go toward ongoing product development, marketing, and hiring to keep pace with a user base that has outgrown its original footprint. A portion is also earmarked for expanding the platform into new locations — the clearest signal that Vatar intends to treat Lagos Life as a template rather than a one-off.
That ambition is the more interesting part of the story. Browser games rarely travel well across markets, and locally flavoured simulations have historically struggled to convert novelty into retention. Vatar's bet is that a game rooted in a specific city — its streets, its slang, its economy — can hold players in a way that generic sandboxes do not, and then be replicated city by city.
For now, the numbers support the pitch. Vatar says the platform attracted millions of users shortly after launch, and the valuation attached to a $500,000 pre-seed reflects how quickly that traction was priced in. Whether the team can turn a viral moment into a durable business — and repeat it in the next city — is what the new capital is meant to buy time for.
Vatar was founded in 2026 by Shalom Rayhamen, Owen Rayhamen and Anderson Oriahi. Lagos Life remains free to play in the browser.
