Voltus raises $225M Series D to scale flexible grid platform toward 20 gigawatts
Generation Investment Management, Activate Capital and Vitol led the round, which Voltus will use to expand its Bring Your Own Capacity program in PJM and MISO.
Voltus has raised $225 million in a Series D financing round, the San Francisco-based distributed energy resource platform announced. Generation Investment Management, Activate Capital and Vitol led the round, with Broadscale Group, Climate Investment, NGP, Ajax Strategies and All Aboard Fund also participating.
The company provides a technology platform that connects distributed energy resources, such as batteries and industrial systems, to electricity markets, with the goal of improving grid reliability and sustainability. It also operates as a virtual power plant, working with businesses and homes to reduce, shift or supply power — an approach the company says lowers energy costs for those participants while supporting grid stability.
Voltus said it plans to use the capital to help close the grid capacity gap. Specifically, the company intends to grow its platform to 20 gigawatts by 2030 and expand its Bring Your Own Capacity program in PJM and MISO, the two wholesale electricity markets where it runs the offering, while scaling operations across the United States and Canada.
The pitch rests on flexibility as a grid resource: rather than building only centralized generation, Voltus aggregates capacity sitting behind meters — batteries, industrial loads and other distributed assets — and bids it into electricity markets. The Series D gives the company a sizable war chest to pursue that aggregation at a much larger scale than it operates today, with the 20-gigawatt target setting a concrete marker for the next several years.
The round was announced with a funding date of October 8, 2026. Voltus is categorized in energy technology and maintains its company site at voltus.co.
The investor mix spans climate-focused growth equity and energy-market participants, and the involvement of three named leads — rather than a single institutional backer — spreads the round across firms with different vantage points on the power sector. Additional participants include Broadscale Group, Climate Investment, NGP, Ajax Strategies and All Aboard Fund.
Voltus was founded to connect distributed energy resources to electricity markets, and its business model depends on enrolling enough businesses and homes to make aggregated load and generation meaningful in market terms. The expansion into PJM and MISO through the Bring Your Own Capacity program, alongside broader U.S. and Canadian operations, is where that enrollment effort will be concentrated under the new funding.
