AI coding agents need somewhere to run — Boxd raises $2M to be that place
Oatly led the $2M pre-seed round, which the San Francisco company will put toward product development and early market entry.
Boxd, a San Francisco company building cloud infrastructure for AI coding agents, has raised $2M in pre-seed funding, according to AI Funding's tracked deal data. Oatly led the round, which is dated September 16, 2026 and is the company's first and only disclosed financing — bringing its cumulative total raised to $2M.
The company provides cloud infrastructure designed to run, manage, and scale AI coding agents for software development teams. That places it in a narrow slice of the AI infrastructure market: the layer that takes agentic software development workloads out of individual local developer environments and into managed, scalable cloud capacity.
Boxd's stated target market is engineering teams and AI-native development workflows that are already adopting coding agents. Its pitch to those buyers is differentiation by focus — infrastructure purpose-built for AI coding agents rather than general-purpose cloud hosting. The $2M is intended to support product development and early market entry.
The bet is essentially about where the work happens. As coding agents move from novelty to daily tooling, the compute, orchestration, and management burden shifts from a developer's laptop to whatever runs the agents at scale. Boxd is positioning itself as that destination rather than a horizontal cloud provider expected to absorb agentic workloads as just another customer type.
The round size is modest against the sums moving through adjacent parts of AI infrastructure. AI Funding's own tracker lists companies such as Databricks at $12.0B total raised, Firmus at $9.4B, Nscale at $8.6B, Crusoe at $8.2B, and Nebius at $6.3B — capital aimed at data centers, GPU clouds, and compute capacity. Boxd is operating several layers up the stack, where the entry price is lower and the competition is defined less by capital expenditure than by how well the product handles the specific demands of agentic development loops.
That distinction matters for a pre-seed company. Boxd is not trying to out-build a hyperscaler; it is trying to own a workflow that general-purpose hosting was not designed around. Whether engineering teams buy a dedicated layer for coding agents, or simply extend the cloud accounts they already have, is the open question the $2M is meant to help answer.
Oatly's involvement marks the company's first named backer in AI Funding's database. Boxd has not disclosed additional investors, valuation, or headcount alongside the round.
