Sony Innovation Fund backs Primitive Labs' behavioral modeling research
Sony Innovation Fund has invested in Primitive Labs, the AI research and product company behind Instinct, an enterprise platform that simulates customer populations to test digital experiences before launch.
Primitive Labs, an AI research and product company developing models of human behavior, has taken an investment from Sony Innovation Fund. The San Francisco-based company announced the deal on October 5, 2026. No round size or valuation was disclosed.
The funding continues the company's behavioral modeling research and the development of Instinct, its enterprise platform. Instinct is designed to let companies model their customers and simulate their interactions before launch — bringing behavioral research into the product development cycle rather than treating it as an afterthought.
The mechanics work like this: using an organization's own user research, product analytics, and behavioral data, Instinct creates simulated customer populations that then navigate digital experiences. Teams across product, design, and research can run those simulations to examine likely customer outcomes.
The stated value proposition is de-risking. According to the company, Instinct helps customers de-risk critical user funnels by identifying points of abandonment and comparing how different audiences respond — all before the company commits to a launch or a major product decision.
That positions Primitive Labs in the emerging category of synthetic user testing, where AI-generated agents stand in for real customers during pre-launch evaluation. The pitch rests on the cost and speed of running simulations against the slower, more expensive alternative of recruiting human testers or learning from a live rollout.
For Sony Innovation Fund, the check adds another behavioral-AI name to a portfolio that spans consumer electronics, entertainment, and the technologies that sit underneath them. Simulated customer behavior has obvious appeal to a corporate investor whose businesses depend on predicting how audiences engage with digital products and services.
Primitive Labs did not disclose the amount of the investment, the round structure, or any financial terms. The company also did not name additional investors beyond Sony Innovation Fund.
