Google.org puts $15M behind The/Nudge to bring AI tools to India's 90M small businesses
The grant funds scalable AI tools for credit access, market discovery and compliance, plus a multilingual voice-led platform to train workers in Tier 3 and Tier 4 towns.
Google.org has committed $15 million in funding to The/Nudge to support the growth and digital adoption of India's micro, small and medium enterprises, the organisation said on 14 October.
The scale of the challenge is the pitch. India has over 90 million small businesses that employ more than 345 million people, according to the announcement, yet many of these businesses face challenges in accessing credit, managing compliance and reaching digital markets. The/Nudge's programme is aimed squarely at those three bottlenecks.
The money will support the development of scalable artificial intelligence tools designed to improve MSMEs' access to formal credit, market discovery and compliance solutions. The initiative sits within Google.org's broader efforts to support India's national AI roadmap — a positioning that ties a philanthropic grant to a national policy agenda rather than to a conventional venture return.
Beyond the technology build, the programme carries a delivery component. It will include an open call for proposals to identify innovative solutions for MSMEs, an attempt to source ideas from outside the usual corporate and investor circuits. It will also feature a multilingual, voice-led platform to train local talent in Tier 3 and Tier 4 towns in job-ready skills and connect them directly with small businesses — a design choice that acknowledges both the language diversity of India's smaller towns and the low-literacy, mobile-first reality of many workers there.
Google.org describes its own mandate as providing funding, programmes and technical expertise to organisations working to expand access to opportunities. Its stated focus areas include knowledge, skills and learning, scientific progress, and stronger communities, and it says it applies Google's technology, research and resources to initiatives aimed at addressing social and economic challenges.
The grant is not an equity round and comes with no valuation. It is, however, a signal about where corporate philanthropy in India is heading: toward AI as an instrument of formalisation rather than as a standalone product. For 90 million small businesses that remain largely outside formal credit and digital marketplaces, the tools built under this programme will be the measure of whether that bet pays off.
