Healthleap Secures $38M in Funding to Enhance Clinical AI for Inpatient Screening
Healthleap has raised $38M in seed and Series A funding, led by Sequoia Capital and First Round Capital, to improve diagnosis of malnutrition in hospitals.
Healthleap, a clinical artificial intelligence platform, has announced a significant funding milestone, securing $38 million in combined seed and Series A financing. This funding round includes an $8 million seed round co-led by Sequoia Capital and First Round Capital, alongside a $30 million Series A led by Hummingbird Ventures. Founded in 2022 by siblings Josiah and Jemima Meyer, Healthleap aims to address a critical gap in the healthcare system—malnutrition diagnosis in hospitalized patients. Research indicates that up to 50% of hospitalized patients are at risk for disease-related malnutrition, yet fewer than 9% receive a formal clinical diagnosis. This oversight results in increased patient morbidity, mortality, and extended hospital stays.
Healthleap's platform innovatively replaces traditional, static screening methods with a comprehensive daily review of each patient's electronic health record (EHR). By examining clinical notes, laboratory trends, vital signs, and active problem lists, Healthleap can identify patients at risk for malnutrition and other overlooked conditions. This proactive approach allows for the timely intervention of healthcare providers, particularly for patients who may be sedated, confused, or critically ill and are often missed by standard screening processes.
The funds raised will be pivotal for scaling Healthleap's technology and expanding its reach within the healthcare industry. The platform's ability to synthesize data and provide prioritized clinical worklists ensures that bedside clinicians and dietitians can focus on high-risk patients first, significantly enhancing patient care.
In addition to its focus on malnutrition, Healthleap plans to broaden its capabilities to include other high-cost acute inpatient conditions. Future expansions may target issues such as congestive heart failure, pressure ulcers, and hospital-acquired infections, further positioning Healthleap as a vital tool in improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare costs. Notably, the platform has already demonstrated financial efficacy, with a deployment at Penn Medicine resulting in an annual return of $23.8 million through improved reimbursement and reduced lengths of stay.
As hospitals face increasing pressure to improve patient outcomes while managing costs, Healthleap's innovative AI-driven approach presents a compelling solution to an urgent healthcare challenge.
