Healthleap Secures $30M in Series A to Enhance AI for Undiagnosed Hospital Conditions
Healthleap has raised $30M in Series A funding led by Hummingbird Ventures to expand its AI platform that identifies undiagnosed conditions in hospitalized patients.
Healthleap, a clinical AI platform designed to detect undiagnosed conditions in hospital patients, has announced a successful $30 million Series A round, led by Hummingbird Ventures. This funding is part of a larger $38 million financing effort, which includes an earlier $8 million seed round co-led by Sequoia Capital and First Round Capital. Healthleap’s technology addresses a critical gap in inpatient diagnostics, particularly for conditions like malnutrition, which affects up to 50% of hospitalized patients. Shockingly, fewer than 9% of these patients receive a formal diagnosis.
Founded in 2022 by siblings Josiah and Jemima Meyer, Healthleap integrates with electronic health records (EHRs) to monitor patient data daily. Its system analyzes complete medical records each morning, synthesizing information from clinical notes, lab results, and vital signs. This approach replaces traditional manual screening processes, which often fail to identify patients due to limited assessment criteria. For instance, hospitals typically rely on a simple two-question survey administered at admission, which can overlook critically ill or confused patients.
The platform's design prioritizes high-risk patients, allowing healthcare providers to address those who need immediate attention first. This proactive diagnostic approach is crucial in preventing complications and reducing hospital lengths of stay.
Healthleap’s impact has already been demonstrated in pilot programs, such as one at Penn Medicine, where the implementation of the AI system generated an impressive $23.8 million in annual financial returns through improved diagnosis and reduced hospital stays. The technology not only helps in capturing more malnutrition cases but also enhances hospital reimbursement opportunities, as malnutrition is classified as a major complication under Medicare payment methodologies.
The newly raised funds will enable Healthleap to expand its capabilities beyond malnutrition, targeting other high-cost conditions like congestive heart failure and hospital-acquired infections. As the healthcare industry continues to evolve, Healthleap is positioned to play a pivotal role in transforming inpatient care by catching overlooked conditions before they escalate, ultimately improving patient outcomes and hospital efficiencies.
