DASH Bets Its ButcherBox Pedigree on Fresh-Frozen Dog Food With $1.5M Seed
Voltage Ventures led the oversubscribed round, with roughly 10% of it earmarked for formulation R&D on new seafood and turkey recipes.
DASH Dog Food, a fresh-frozen subscription brand that began life as ButcherBox for Pets, has closed an oversubscribed $1.5M Seed round led by Voltage Ventures, an early-stage firm focused on animal health. Western Technology Investment and a group of unnamed individual investors from direct-to-consumer protein, cold-chain logistics and retail also participated. The company announced the close on September 22, 2026.
The money is slated for paid customer acquisition, subscription growth, a packaging redesign and two new recipes built around seafood and turkey, adding to a current beef-and-chicken lineup. Roughly 10% of the round is allocated to formulation R&D, according to the company's announcement. DASH did not disclose its valuation, ownership terms or the identities of the individual investors.
The strategic case rests less on the recipes than on the founder. Bobby Quirk, DASH's founder and CEO, was ButcherBox's first hire and later served as its VP of Operations, spending a decade inside meat sourcing, supplier management and subscription commerce. DASH's pitch is that the same discipline transfers to a category where the person buying the food and the animal eating it are not the same creature — a decision the buyer delegates daily and cannot easily audit.
Alongside the round, Marissa Bertorelli, general partner at Voltage Ventures, and Mike Salguero, founder and CEO of ButcherBox, are joining the DASH board, pairing an animal-health investment thesis with the sourcing and subscription history that produced the company.
The brand separated from ButcherBox in June 2025, formally rebranded as DASH in June 2026, and discontinued its dry-food line to concentrate on fresh-frozen meals. DASH says revenue rose 130% after the separation — a company-reported figure, not an audited result. The company has not disclosed absolute revenue, subscriber count, retention, customer-acquisition cost or gross margin.
DASH markets its meals under the term "Table-Grade," describing humanely raised, 100% grass-fed beef or certified organic chicken with no added antibiotics or hormones, pre- and postbiotics, and sous-vide cooking in small batches at 165°F. "Table-Grade" is the company's own positioning language rather than a formal FDA or AAFCO regulatory category, so its value depends on the sourcing, formulation, testing and disclosure behind it. DASH says its meals are formulated to meet AAFCO nutrient profiles for complete and balanced nutrition; its public materials describe the formulation route and do not establish that the recipes completed an AAFCO feeding trial.
The market is large, if crowded. The American Pet Products Association projects $165B in total U.S. pet-industry sales in 2026, including $69.7B for pet food and treats, and reports dogs live in 53% of U.S. households. Owners can choose among dry food, wet food, refrigerated and frozen meals, veterinary diets, toppers, treats and home preparation.
